Outstanding Achievement Awards

ASHLEY C. has been a pupil of Ms. Medvedeva at Jean Lyons School of Music since 2008. Throughout her years at the school, she has participated in many events, including monthly recitals, Gala concerts and Scholarship Recitals. She has competed regularly in both the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival and Richmond Music Festival and has won numerous first places in solo and ensemble categories.

This past year Ashley completed the Royal Conservatory of Music grade 10 exam, obtaining 91%. Throughout her studies at the Jean Lyons School, she has consistently achieved First Class Honours with Distinction in piano, theory and history exams with marks ranging from 90% to 99%, and has been awarded a medal for her Analysis exam mark of 90% as it was the highest mark in the Coquitlam and Maple Ridge catchment.

Ashley is a straight A Grade 11 student at Sir Charles Tupper Secondary School and a star player on the school’s basketball team. She is currently working hard, preparing for her ARCT exam. Congratulations Ashley!

The year 2016 has been particularly busy for 12 year old CYNTHIA C., pupil of May Lim. In April, she performed at the Vancouver Women’s Musical Society Royal Conservatory of Music ‘Top Marks’ Recital and also competed in the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival where she placed first in 3 classes and received the Scarlatti Medallion.

In May, she placed first in 4 classes in the BC Conservatory of Music Festival with marks of 95 and 96, and was awarded 2 Senior Bursaries.

In June, she completed both the University of West London LCM Performance Diploma exam and the Royal Conservatory of Music Grade 10 exam in the same week, receiving marks of 89 and 90 respectively. This success was followed by the Royal Conservatory of Music History 2 exam in August in which she achieved a mark of 98.

Cynthia is currently a grade 7 student at Glenwood Elementary in Burnaby where she plays alto saxophone in the school band and is also the National Anthem pianist. She enjoys volleyball and basketball, and is a member of her School’s leadership club.

 

Cynthia is currently preparing for the Intermediate Harmony exam in December and her goals are to complete Advanced Harmony, History 3, ARCT and London College of Music Licentiate exams in the coming years. Piano studies will continue to be a priority in Cindy’s life for the foreseeable future.

MARKUS M., a student of Jean Brown, had many highlights in his musical career this past year. Here are some of them:

Markus represented Coquitlam at the Performing Arts BC Provincial Festival in Fort St. John for the Senior Level age group and won First Place.
In June he completed the ARCT level Piano Performance examination and received the outstanding mark of 96% for which he was awarded the Gold Medal from the Royal Conservatory- the highest mark in Canada.

During the summer, Markus participated in the Courtney music program under Professor Corey Hamm where he learned and performed Quintet #1 by Dohnanyi, while in August, Markus travelled to beautiful Revelstoke and studied with Professor Moroz. Here, he performed the Trio in B flat major, by Beethoven.

Markus was asked to represent the Tri-Cities/Maple Ridge branch of the Registered Music Teachers in their prestigious BC Piano competition in September. The competition took place in front of over 100 teachers and professors and featured some of the top young pianists in the province. Markus placed First and will represent BC at the Music Teachers National Association Conference in Baltimore Maryland in March 2017, competing in the Canadian National Piano Competition with renowned pianist Leon Fleisher adjudicating.

Markus plans to study music with a focus on Piano Performance when he enters University in September of 2017.
