Music Appreciation Talks

Indulge your curiosity and enhance your concert-going experience with presentations designed as an introduction to some of your most beloved and important composers and their works. Learn about their fascinating lives, inspirations, loves, struggles and triumphs. Explore the differences between music of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern eras as music evolves through the ages.

Being able to read music is an asset, but not a requirement for participants.


Series 1

Time: Tuesdays, 1:15pm to 2:45pm
Dates: October 3 to November 21
Cost: $120 (VSO tickets not included as these field trips are optional)

  • Composers include Bach, Mozart and Beethoven

One of the pieces discussed during this Series is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, conducted by Alexander Bloch. The VSO will be performing this piece on November 11th at the Orpheum Theatre as a part of their Beethoven’s Fifth concert.



Series 2

Time: Tuesdays, 1:00pm to 2:30pm
Dates: January 9 to February 27
Cost: $120 (VSO tickets not included as these field trips are optional)

  • Composers include Berlioz, Liszt, Debussy and Stravinsky

One of the pieces discussed during this Series Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, conducted by Bramwell Tovey. The VSO will be performing this piece on January 27th at the Orpheum Theatre as a part of their Fantastique concert.
