Music Appreciation Talks

Indulge your curiosity and enhance your concert-going experience with our Music Appreciation Talks. These are designed to be an introduction to some of your most beloved and important composers and their works. Learn about their fascinating lives, inspirations, loves, struggles and triumphs. Explore the differences between music of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern eras as music evolves through the ages.

The ability to read music is an asset, but is not a requirement for participants.

Series 1: Form and Structure in Music

Time: Tuesdays, 1:15pm to 2:45pm
Dates: October 9 to November 27, 2018
Cost: $120 (VSO tickets not included as these field trips are optional)

A survey of the structural frameworks used in music. Traditional forms will be examined using illustrative works from solo instrumental, chamber music, concertos, symphonies, operas, oratorio and art song.

Series 2: The History of the Piano

Time: Tuesdays, 1:00pm to 2:30pm
Dates: January 8 to February 26, 2019
Cost: $120 (VSO tickets not included as these field trips are optional)

Discover the development of the instrument and its rise to prominence within Western society from the 18th century to present day. This series will feature the lives and careers of Chopin and Rachmaninoff.
